As a costume designer, my process involves a deep exploration of the identity I carry with me, the identity of the character I am discovering through research, and the identity of the actor who will ultimately bring this character to life. In my designs for the production of Indecent as a graduate student at Northwestern University, I manifested this philosophy by allowing the actors’ identities to become an active feature of the final design. As the characters in Indecent reflected on the immense loss of humanity endured by the Jewish people during the Holocaust, the actors wore identity prayer shawls, which I designed in collaboration with them to ensure the authenticity of their identities and heritage on stage. This integration of the characters and actors creates a multilayered storytelling experience and represents my approach to communicating important narratives to diverse audiences. As an artist, my goal is to create a space where both the audience and the cast members can explore and question the complexities of identities in a meaningful and thought-provoking way.
